WHANGANUI RIVER MAORI TRUST BOARD

‘E rere kau mai te awa nui mai te Kahui Maunga ki Tangaroa, ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au.’

" The negotiations will probably be long and complex so I ask we all stay focused work together and support each other. What we are about to embark on is the fulfilment of the work that our Tupuna began all those years ago.  Now it is up to us to leave our Mokopuna with a legacy that they can be proud of.” Archie Taiaroa  – Ko Au Te Awa Newsletter 2002

In 1988 the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board was constituted under the Maori Trust Boards Act 1955.

The beneficiaries of the Board are the descendants and Hapu of Tama Upoko, Hinengakau and Tupoho. In addition to the functions conferred on the Board by section 24 of the Maori Trust Boards Act 1955, the Board shall from time to time negotiate with the Government, or any other body or authority concerned, for the settlement of all outstanding claims relating to the customary rights and usages of Te Iwi O Whanganui, or any particular Hapu, Whanau, or group, in respect of the Whanganui River, including the bed of the river, its minerals, its water, and its fish.

Throughout the lifespan of the Board its roles and functions have primarily focused on the care, protection and use of the Whanganui River. Major facilitation of the Whanganui River Claim, the impacts of the Tongariro Power Development Scheme and seeking recognition of promises made to Iwi in the establishment of the Whanganui National Park continue to be ongoing responsibilities of the Trust Board. In 2008 the Trust Boards focus is on working towards transition to a post settlement environment. One of the biggest challenges facing the tribe in the 21st Century is the maintenance of links to Whanganui Iwi descendents.

This website aims to assist in the maintenance of links with Whanganui Iwi descendents through the Whanganui Iwi Tribal Register this is used to distribute panui/newsletters and any other relevant information to keep us up to date. If you are a descendent of Whanganui Iwi please fill in an Iwi Registration form and post it to:

CONNECTING HOME

It is becoming increasingly important that we as Whanganui stay connected no matter how far away we may be.

Every person who is a descendent of Whanganui Nui tonu has the right to know who they are and where they come from.

The Trust Board will do its best to try and help you with Whakapapa however you can also try the following as starting points in your journey

  • Perhaps you know which marae your whanau affiliate to. Contact the Marae using the Marae contacts list. If there is a number to make enquiries for bookings give them a call ask if they might know who your whanau are or perhaps they can direct you to someone from the greater hapu who can assist you

  • www.maorilandonline.co.nz search the register for your parents or grandparents name. If you can find the name of a close relative it can sometimes lead you to the land blocks from which your whanau may descend from.

Other ways to stay in touch with Whanganui are:

  • Via this website. Keep up to date with what is happening for the Iwi
  • Stay in touch via email & mail out panui. Remembering to keep your details up to date
  • Partaking in Whanganui wananga and other events
  • Making contact with other whanau or marae
  • Visiting home
  • Listen to what is happening at home live via www.awafm.co.nz

In order to view this site correctly, you will need to install flash-player.
